Well, rachel says she can, with three conditions: 1) Know what you are going to write before you write it 2) Set aside a protected time to write, and 3) feel enthusiastic about what you are writing. I read the post with interest. Much of what Rachel did conformed with what I suggest save in my earlier post, but I couldnt bring myself to really believe rachels productivity claims. To regularly write 10,000 words: Its the dream, right? Imagine if you could reliably write 10,000 words a day, how long would it take to finish your thesis A week? How about a journal paper a day? Or so i thought.

You can write more if you want, but 500 words is the minimum. If you miss a day, pick up where you left off. Dont make up for lost days. Encourage, dont criticize (unless explicitly invited to do so). Blogging counts, but email does not. All of this is totally free.

So what do i do? Do i try to write the whole thing in one sitting or keep fixating over the book concept? Do i continue obsessing over getting the table of contents just right or worry about what critics will think of this sentence or that paragraph? I just get up and write my 500 words. . Turns out, thats all writing really is — showing. Not worrying about the outcome, just honoring the process. You write sentences that turn into paragraphs. And paragraphs turn into sections that, then, turn into chapters. In other words, it all begins with words. You dont control the outcome, just the process. Im in the middle of writing my next book right now, and its scaring me to death. . It feels so important, so audacious, that Im locking up, completely paralyzed. I report dont want to mess this up (its supposed to be the best thing ive written so far). And because of that fear Im having trouble starting.
